Political Ephemera, 1880s - 1940s

Campaign promises, scurrilous attacks by political foes, pledges of integrity and faithful servitude…

Do these sound like phrases from the 2012 elections? Actually they’re from campaigns long ago, revealed in an exhibit, Political Ephemera, 1880s-1940s, in the Galveston and Texas History Center.

The Galveston and Galveston County flyers, announcements, and slogans on display have recurring themes in common with today’s issues, such as taxes, schools, roads, public services, jobs, and land development. Yet they also show stark differences from the present, revealing a progression of social attitudes.
