Ticket to Ride

Excursion to Dickinson FairRide into Galveston’s past through this eclectic display of ephemera from the Rosenberg Library’s Galveston and Texas History Center.

“Ephemera” is a term describing printed memorabilia such as tickets, advertising bills, brochures, and flyers. The Library has been collecting ephemera since its 1904 inception and now has over 50 boxes of such Galveston material.

Exhibited items, dating from 1904 - 1946, depict the many facets of the theme Ticket to Ride – early modes of transportation, romantic excursions, and exciting entertainment – and give one a glimpse into Galveston’s active social life.

Of the more than 30 items featured were a moonlight barge excursion benefitting the new Galveston Boat & Yacht Club; a special train to Port Arthur to view the largest whale caught in this part of the country; auto races on the beach; and the International Pageant of Pulchritude, to name a few.

The Galveston and Texas History Center is located on the 4th floor of the Rosenberg Library and its hours are Tuesday - Saturday, 9 am - 6 pm. For more information, please contact Sean McConnell, Archivist, at smcconnell@rosenberg-library.org.
