Rosenberg Library is pleased to announce its selection for the Summer 2017 Museum Club series: The Orphans’ Nine Commandments by William R. Holman. Both heartbreaking and inspiring, Holman’s memoir recounts his life as young orphan in Oklahoma during the Great Depression.

The first meeting of the Summer Museum Book Club will take place on Wednesday, June 28 from 12 noon – 1:00 p.m. A second session will be held on Thursday, August 17 from 12 noon – 1:00 p.m. The Museum Book Club will meet in the McCullough Room located on the library’s 2nd floor. Light refreshments are provided at all sessions.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Though she provided a loving home for him during his first years, William Holman’s mother abruptly abandoned him at an Oklahoma orphanage when he was six years old. Longing for his mother and curious about the father he never knew, Holman endured a long journey through several orphanages and foster homes until he was finally adopted into a stable and supportive home as a teenager.

In spite of his unstable and tumultuous childhood, William Holman obtained degrees from two universities, got married, and raised three sons of his own. As an adult, he finally discovered the identity of his father and was able to connect with a family who never knew he existed.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
In spite of his unstable and tumultuous childhood, William Holman obtained degrees from two universities, got married, and raised three sons of his own. He had a long and distinguished career as a library administrator (including serving as the director of Rosenberg Library during the 1950s), a professor at the Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas, and — with his wife Barbara — owner of a fine book publishing firm.

Holman serves as a mentor for the Orphan Foundation of America. The Holmans live in Austin and enjoy golfing, sailing, and book collecting.

FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION
Rosenberg Library preserves materials related to several orphanages which once operated on Galveston Island. These include historic photographs and documents, as well as art work from these institutions.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM BOOK CLUB
Rosenberg Library’s Museum Book Club offers participants the chance to experience art and literature in a more interactive way. Members have the opportunity to view rarely exhibited art and historical artifacts from the library’s permanent collection as they discuss related books.

Registration is required for all Museum Book Club meetings. Established book clubs are encouraged to participate. Groups of over 10 people are asked to call the Reference Desk in advance to arrange accommodations.

The Orphans' Nine Commandments is available for check-out at Rosenberg Library in hard copy. Visit www.rosenberg-library.org or call (409) 763 - 8854 ext. 115 for additional information or to register.
